Call for Proposals: "FY2024: Interdisciplinary Research Strategy Projects" Nagoya University, Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE)

The Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE) is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms and interactions of diverse phenomena in the Earth, Sun, and space as a single integrated system. ISEE aims to contribute to the resolution of global environmental issues and the development of human society expanding into space. As the only collaborative research center that bridges space and Earth sciences, ISEE promotes a wide range of collaborative research and contributes to the improvement of the standards in related fields. ISEE also encourages the development of new academic fields beyond the conventional ones. Furthermore, as an affiliated research institute of Nagoya University, ISEE strives to strengthen and internationalize the research capabilities and functions of Nagoya University, focusing on academic research, talent development, and social contributions.

In line with these objectives, ISEE established the Office for the Development of Interdisciplinary Research Strategy (ODIRS) in August 2022 to facilitate interdisciplinary research within Tokai National Higher Education and Research System. Within this context, ODIRS is now seeking proposals for "Interdisciplinary Research Strategy Projects", which involve collaborative efforts between faculty, staff, and researchers from Tokai National Higher Education and Research System and ISEE. Their objective will be to explore and promote new interdisciplinary research connecting space science, Earth science, and other fields. The scope of the public call includes not only specific research activities but also the establishment of foundational structures and the organization of workshops to foster integrative research. The proposed topics should encompass two perspectives: "Exploration of Collaboration with ISEE" and "Concrete Joint Research". The former pertains to preliminary, idea-based activities, seeking potential research themes through meetings, workshops, and surveys with ISEE-affiliated faculty members. The latter refers to feasibility studies and specific research endeavors based on concrete ideas and research themes.

The principal investigator and the core members of the research organization must be affiliated with the Tokai National Higher Education and Research System. However, for the advancement members, participation from outside the university is possible, and it is expected that a wider range of knowledge and experience will be gathered to further enhance integrative research. Additionally, the proposed integrative research strategy projects should be conducted within a framework that includes ISEE faculty and staff. For the proposed topics, it is required that a thorough discussion is held in advance with the responsible faculty member from ISEE. This discussion is a crucial process for sharing a clear understanding of the project's objectives, content, budget, etc., and for laying the groundwork for the success of the integrative research strategy projects. Establishing direction and support mechanisms for the planning and implementation of research activities through preliminary discussions with ISEE faculty is essential. All candidates applying for the public call are strongly encouraged to engage sincerely in this process.
